RESIDENTS in a Gwent village were shocked when their post office suddenly closed without warning.

The Cefn Fforest post office was not on the list of Gwent post offices earmarked for closure, and customers don't know why it has been shut for the last two weeks.

Post Office Ltd. said it is a temporary closure due to "operational reasons", and the branch, in Fforest Avenue, will re-open soon.

Cefn Fforest councillor Tom Williams said: "It's causing a lot of inconvenience.

"People have got to go down to Blackwood or Fleur De Lis, which is not easy for everyone.

"Even the free cash machine outside has been shut down, which is causing a lot of hassle."

Cefn Fforest resident and secretary of the local community centre Marian Edwards, aged 64, collects her pension from the branch weekly.

She said: "Everyone's talking about it but no-one knows what's happened.

"We are stunned. It's a loss to the village. We all use it regularly and now we are having to go elsewhere."

A spokesperson for Post Office Ltd said: "I can confirm that the Cefn Fforest post office branch remains temporarily closed for operational reasons.

"We are working hard to re-open the branch as soon as practically possible and we wish to apologise to customers for the inconvenience that this short term temporary closure may cause them."

Alternative post offices are at: Gilfach, Fleur De Lys, Blackwood, Penmaen, Bargoed, Penllwyn and Cefn-Hengoed.
